On the occasion of the EGAA Meeting at Cairo in 2019, the orthopaedic surgeons Basim Fleega and Yasser Elsafoury decided that there was a need for an Egyptian Society of Shoulder Surgery. Basim Fleega was 39 years working as a shoulder surgeon in Bonn Germany after a fellowship with Charles Neer in New York and was a founding member the German Shoulder Society in 1992, he absolved 30 hears as a director of the GOC shoulder arthroscopic surgery hospital in Bonn Germany and now is a specialist of shoulder surgery in Cairo.
The EGSSA logo was created in draft form by Basim Fleega on a piece of paper – the humerus the scapula and ribs in Tut Anch Amoun crown 2019, a very artistic senior medical designer working with Basim Fleega – Mohamed Ezz L Deen – drew up the logo based on Basim’s idea.
Yasser Elsafoury an upper extremity shoulder surgeon with a major interst in open shoulder surgery and microsurgery and is the head of an orthopedic department in Kasr Elaini University hospital.
After having gathered a group of delegates of various medical centers and university hospitals with a similar interest, the Egyptian Shoulder surgery association was officially inaugurated in 2020.

Our association provides for scientific cooperation and continuing training of Egyptian orthopedic surgeons.

2Moving Forward Strategic Goals
High and Equal: EGSSA works for increasing the level of knowledge and experience of young surgeons to the highest possible degree, and eliminate all unfavorable circumstances that interfere. EGSSA also aims to guarantee that all its members are subjected to a structured and standardized education program on which they can later build their personal reflexions. In this purpose EGSSA will;
o Announce and publish the Shoulder Curriculum and will provide educational platforms which cover a significant percentage of its content.
o Implement the EGSSA Certification program and establish the minimum conditions to enable all young members to subscribe.
o Increase the number of surgeons that profit of EGSSA resources in educational purposes.
o Create live or online platforms on which young surgeons can meet with the opinion leaders
o Increase the number of fellows continuesly and start new fellowship programs.
o Collaborate with its peer societies in establishing a higher baseline for minimum level of knowledge of the Egyptian and internationalorthopedic surgeons.
EGSSA aims to be tuned up to the highest level of scientifically proven innovation. Moreover, EGSSA intends to endorse creative projects and encourages the invention. For this purpose, EGSSA will;
o Support innovative approaches and interdisciplinary collaborations for translational research.
o Encourage opinion leaders to contribute to the research and development of new techniques and products.
o Financially support high quality scientific work and task force assignments.
o Increase the number of scientific awards in order to motivate researchers for innovative projects.
EGSSA focuses on being recognized as a trademark with its high quality contributions to the scientific events and a refined evaluation process before granting patronages. In this purpose EGSSA will;
o Implement the ‘New Patronage Criteria’ so that EGSSA patronage is renowned as a standard and increase the attractiveness of selected events.
o Introduce ‘Institutional Certification’ as a permanent type of Patronage where Medical Centers that met the predetermined criteria would be given the title of ‘EGSSA Centre of Excellence’
To encourage opinion leaders and supports conjugate reaction and movement towards controversies as a reference organization. To act against patient dissatisfaction and reinforce practical areas that are prone to generate conflicts. In this way EGSSA would;
o Propose legal institutions an official service of expert opinion in cases of litigation relating to conditions affecting the shoulder.
o Officially contribute to the creations of new Egyptian and in collaboration a Mefrica Regulations for the medical devices in use.
o Create task forces to inspect new implants or surgical techniques used in the treatment of shoulder and elbow disorders.
o Use social media accounts and website to reach a significant amount of non-member population, to promote the society, to increase its recognition and to contribute community-based education for the fulfillment of its social responsibility.
EGSSA takes action in order to increase the number of junior members and to facilitate by all means the subscription process for young members to the society. To achieve that, EGSSA will;
o Introduce ‘Junior Members Committee’ in order to amplify junior members’ voice as they will be represented directly on the Executive Committee by their chairman. This committee mainly focuses on the circumstances that affect Egyptian young shoulder and elbow surgeons in their education or professional life.
